tried robert's suggestion but all I received was a recorded message from
verizon stating that "my call could not be connected as dialed...".

I got this from Xlink support 1/11/13;
just pick up phone and dial * * * (then you should hear some beeping) now
dial 1 2 # (you will hear some more beeping and the unit will reset)
