Re: [apple-iphone] iphone 4 - Need to upgrade iOS

Anne,

Try this.
With your iTunes open, plug your phone into a working USB port on your computer. Give it a couple minutes to recognize the device. You may even get a notification that there's an update for your device. Say no for now until you can do a backup.
On the left hand side where you saw the listing, go down about half way and find something that may say Anne's iPhone or whatever you named your phone. Click on that. Your centre window should change to show you a Summary screen of what's on your phone. Read through that. There should be tabs along the top of that window for various things on your phone like Mail, Contacts, music, books, etc. anyways, on the summary screen scroll down to where you see Backup. Select backup to your computer. Then click on Sync in the lower right corner. Then you can watch the grey bar at the top to see what it's doing. When the grey bar goes back to an apple, that's when it is finished. It may take awhile so be patient.
Se how far you can get and add in some of Jim's instructions where you need to to do what you want. This should get you started I hope. Post more if you need more help.

Cheers,
