Hi Anne,
It seems that you weren't told some very basic stuff when you bought the
iPhone!
None of what you need to do can happen unless you connect the phone to the
computer using the dock/charging cable. Unplug the cable from the charger
and connect the end (the USB plug) that was in the charger into a USB port
on the computer. Then you should see the phone appear in iTunes as
described.
Try that and get back to us.
