Out on the country roads, I would "squeeze" the map to view city-to-city. I could never really tell if I was 5 miles away or 25 miles, because there was no gauge to see an inch = 10 miles, etc.

On my iPhone, iOS 6, maps -- I have a route determined, and it's giving me directions.
If I tap once on the screen, the map slides down a little, and the "menu bar" shows at the top, with signal strength, time, battery, and also Maps control bar, with "End", "Overview", and also time, distance and ETA to the chosen destination.
