The thing is I don't want the destination information.
For example, if I'm driving from NYC to Chicago, I can get the distance. But on the trip, I decide to stop along the way in Philadelphia. If I could "squeeze" the map to show Philly, and my current location, and a scale was available, I could estimate if I was 20 miles or 150 miles away.
I'm not concerned about overall distance. I just don't want to have to redo a map inquiry for a short-term situation. Yes, I know I can recall recent destinations but the convenience of a scale that adjusts based on the map image would be great.

Out on the country roads, I would "squeeze" the map to view city-to-city. I could never really tell if I was 5 miles away or 25 miles, because there was no gauge to see an inch = 10 miles, etc.

On my iPhone, iOS 6, maps -- I have a route determined, and it's giving me directions.
If I tap once on the screen, the map slides down a little, and the "menu bar" shows at the top, with signal strength, time, battery, and also Maps control bar, with "End", "Overview", and also time, distance and ETA to the chosen destination.
