This is an annoyance I've long felt with an infinitely rescalable map--you lose any sense of scale as you pinch-and-zoom in and out. I often navigate for a friend as they're driving, and lose track of whether we're a block away or just around the corner from a freeway entrance or something like that. A scale along one edge would be a great help.

Out on the country roads, I would "squeeze" the map to view city-to-city. I could never really tell if I was 5 miles away or 25 miles, because there was no gauge to see an inch = 10 miles, etc.
