Yes, anything converted will show as a "home movie".

There must be a setting somewhere on the iPad that disables the viewing of Home Movies since I couldn't view these until I changed them to Media:Movie.

Was Handbrake used? Were the iPad presets selected?

Have you checked the Videos>Home Movies tab on your iPad?  That is where my movie content not purchased from iTunes shows up.
