I would erase it first by going to Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content & Settings. Then set it up as new using your own iTunes information.

I have become the owner of a used iPod. It belonged to my grandson who is now using an iPhone, has forgotten the password and no longer cares about the gadget. I would like to clean it out and use it.
I have tried the home button and the on/off switch--that did not work. I plugged it into my iTunes and it does not reset it. Any help would be appreciated.
