Re: [apple-iphone] Source of lightning cables

Wilton,

Yes, I agree, the cable with 5 connectors is not a problem Apple would ever choose to solve.

I don't know whether you were agreeing or not with my comment that is was most likely not authorized by Apple.

I am assuming that lightning cost a little more, because of the chip and license to mimic Apples design or chip program. To modify your "Kentucky windage" of cost of materials to build the cable, add the additional cost of the license from Apple to be Apple authorized. I am guessing that Apple licenses are not cheap. I am not commenting either way on Apple licensing.

I don't know what will happen with this cheap knock-off cable, but in the past, but those are the ones that stop working after a update. My time, and dependability are worth more than a few buck.

I occasionally will buy cheap hand tools, if I know I am going to modify it or purposely abuse it. Otherwise, I buy good quality tools, but when working with technology, I try to buy good quality. This cable might be the right one for the OP, but to say it is Apple authorized because it works today, is wrong. Either the packaging or the manufacturer's web site should say it is authorized, and the manufacturer and seller would be proud enough to advertise this, after paying the licensing fee.

Brent

Having worked as a Component Engineer for a fortune 500 company for about 35 years, I have worked with cables.  When someone wanted to price a new short cable we had a rule.  The wire is free but the connectors will cost you 50 cents each in volume.  This rule has worked very well for many years.

Going by that rule, an Apple cable has two connectors so it costs them about 1 dollar to build.  Apple charges $19.50 on their web site.

The one listed in the link had 5 connectors so it should cost about $2.50 to build.  Everybuying.com charges $3.36 for theirs.

It may well be that this is not an Apple approved cable but it solves a problem for me that Apple will never choose to solve.

If you want to pay the Apple tax, that is your choice but people who have never worked in manufacturing need to understand what the true costs are.
