To remove the grid, go to Settings>Photos&Camera>Grid & tap the button to turn it off. Show your husband how to tap on his screen to focus the subject of his photos. Here' s a helpful article on that subject:

also when he is about to take a picture, his screen if divided into a grid of squares. I tried to get rid of them...but couldn't find a way to do it.
I know it must be there, but I'm not smart enough to find it, so need your help! We both have iphone5
