Fraying and shorting is one issue - but there may be another. I remember I had about 2 or 3 lightning cables in a row (genuine Apple) that quit working when they were even slightly flexed at the lightning connector end. The last one I got is still working, but I treat it like and eggshell. My daughter has been through several herself. She is not as careful as I am. She is using third party now and doesn't have problems.
