We get a question here about once a week to which the answer is the mute switch. Even those of us who know about it sometimes overlook it.
One problem seems to be that removing the phone from a case, or replacing it, can move the switch without this being noticed.
My phone is on mute all the time but with vibrate on. I'm rarely somewhere where I need the ringer.

that very thing happened to a friend a couple of days ago. she could play music but the phone ringer was not working. she is not very tech savvy so she called her carrier's tech support line. she says the guy spent an hour with her on the phone…do this, try that. they even had her back up the phone on itunes, erase everything on the phone and then restore it. she says the guy gave up and offered her a replacement phone if she would extednd contract for an an additional 2-years so she went with that. then she called me. I went over to the house, picked up the phone, turned off the mute switch and all was good. I'm really surprised that the tech didn't have her check that. she said she's had the phone for over a year and never knew what that switch was for. my experience has been…it's almost always something simple.
