Re: [apple-iphone] 5c lightning cable doesn't work

I admit I don't treat my cables gingerly but I don't abuse them either

My first iPhone cable (3G) failed quickly and Apple charged my card. $20 to send a new one and I had to send the old one back

When the Griffin in my car failed, I called them and had a new one in two days - no charge and no return - never failed again

My friend who lives in Vancouver WA and recently switched to CC told me that it uses the AT&T Network.

The AT&T Network is GSM. As is T-Mobile. And others.

It runs on ATT network, so it must be GMS.

Consumer Cellular is a ATT carrier which I believe is GSM.  Since I am already with ATT, it shouldn't be a problem switching over.

I also have replace 2-3 of my original ones as well. All Apple cables are poorly built.

Well, lucky you.

The original poster is experiencing it now, hence this thread.

Two of my original lightning cables have gone useless the past month. Got them November (my iPhone 5S) and December (extra cable bought from Apple Store). No abuse. I'm a very careful user. Just really poor quality. My brother's cable that came with his iPhone 5 has been replaced too for the same reason. Now he puts electrical tape all around the cable to try to protect it from breaking or whatever damage because he knows it is really flimsy. And I'm doing the same thing when I get my replacement cable.

> Every Apple-made cable for an iPod, iPhone, or iPad that I have gotten in the past decade all still work fine.

And oh yes. every Apple-made cable for iPod, iPhone and iPad that I have gotten in the past decade all still work fine too. That was back when their cables were still great. The insulation was thicker. The edges had something like a shock absorber. You know, everything you expect from a quality cable. Too bad you can no longer use them for the newer devices.

The last good cable from Apple were from iPhone 3GS. The one I got with that phone is still working. When they changed the design starting with the one that came with iPhone 4, it has become horrible.

Check this to compare:

And they maintained that design even for the lightning cables, except they're "lightning", not 30-pin.

> I suspect that a lot of the griping comes from folks who chronically abuse their cables.

There are several discussions about Apple's cable quality. Here's one:

I do not think it is fair to judge them as chronic abuser of cables. No one wants to go through all the hassle and expenses of having to replace a cable. If it is a good cable, it should be able to withstand standard usage, or a few pulls here and there.

It is good to note though that Apple takes care of it under warranty, although if it has some cracks, you might have to do some convincing to make them honor the warranty.

Re: [apple-iphone] Consumer Cellular

I wish I could answer that, Vishal, but all I know of CC is that it works perfectly (here in southeastern Michigan) at a very reasonable price.  CC does have a website, which may lead to more information.

I have the senior plan at $45 month: 200 minutes phone, 200 MB data and no texting.  Consumer Cellular seems very reasonable and tempting.   Here is a link to their plans.

Re: [apple-iphone] 5c lightning cable doesn't work

Since the nearest Apple Store is about 90 minutes away, try calling AppleCare. They may just mail you a cable.

I do that to trouble shoot things before I go in to the Apple Store 15 minutes away, just to cover things that might miss, without having to drag in other items.

Every 5c in the world is less than 1 year old, and therefore still under warranty.
Take it to an Apple Store.

If the service is bad in your area, it does not matter what anyone elsewhere says. Find people in your area to find out what they think of the service.

All people from other areas can tell you is about their customer service.

Re: [apple-iphone] 5c lightning cable doesn't work

Make that three.

I have not had an Apple cable for Mac or iPhone, ever go bad. I have been an Apple customer since 1998. I have had ports go bad, but never a cable.

I have had several 3rd party earbud cables go bad, but never the wires on an Apple set.

I have good luck with extension cords, too, and I have worked around construction. I guess that is because I remove them by the plug and not the cable.

Since you are 90 minutes from an Apple Store, how about calling AppleCare. They might just mail you a new cable.

For me, the Apple Store is only 15 minutes, but I usually call AppleCare first, to run through anything I had not thought of, and so I don't have to bring in any other hardware. Sometimes I get to the store and they either replace it or run just specific tests and then sent it out for repairs. In and out fast.
