When I joined my first Yahoo Group I thought I had to get a Yahoo ID, but since then I've seen (as a moderator) that many members join via email without one. Brent (N.A Nada) must have done this. For such members, email must be the default; for the rest, they can log in and choose their preferred message delivery.
Moderators can help, of course, if members have difficulty changing their preference.
