Yes. You can keep the old pre-iCloud Apple ID but no iCloud until you change it to an email address. And no, not nitpicking. Just going with the flow of the discussion. The guy you earlier replied to mentioned exactly the same thing I said - having to change Apple ID to an email address to be able to use iCloud.
But I agree, this is digressing.

Not exactly, since someone is nit picking. The new accounts require a e-ddress as a username, but the old ones don't. They all, past and current, do require an email to set up, but only the recent and current require a e-ddress as a username.
And what we were speaking of was not being able to merge multiple Apple IDs.On Jan 15, 2014, at 8:22 PM, someone wrote:It has changed. It's now an email address.Sandy, like I said, it has gone on for years. I got my first Apple ID in 1998, and things have not changed in all that time.
So just get used to it.On Jan 15, 2014, at 5:40 AM, Sandy Foster wrote:> Join the club. A lot of us have run into this, and there is no way to merge multiple Apple IDs. Be glad you only have two. I've had four and I have finally abandoned one of them, and hardly use another.
I acquired my first Apple ID before iCloud was available; I didn't see the point of paying for MobileMe at the time, since I had an email address through my private domain. So that Apple ID is now used only for iTunes and Mac App Store purchases. Then, in order to use some of the iCloud functions, I needed to get another ID, this time with the .me suffix. This is the one I use for syncing my iCloud Notes, Contacts, Calendars, etc., between devices. I really wish I could merge the two IDs, no matter which one ended up being the final "winner", but it's not looking good.
