No, there doesn't seem to be a reason for it in charging mode except that, after charging, low power mode is off.
Someone suggested an external battery. That would work except there's the feature we're talking about, Low Battery Mode, that comes with the iPhone. I should be able to use the feature without it automatically shutting off.

AliceI haven't seen this question asked, or addressed, before but I have to say that this doesn't surprise me.Low power mode is not intended as the default condition, and there doesn't seem much reason for it when the device is connected to an external power source.
