The old way of having a subsidized phone with a 2 year (24 month) contract seems better. At the end if the 2 years, you keep the phone. Sounds like with the new deal, at the end of 2 years you still have a balance to pay in order to keep the phone.

*I* think it's a good idea.

It doesn't cost the user any more; more of that money that you pay out [goes to Apple, and less to the carrier; you get an UNLOCKED phone you can take to any carrier; and it includes Applecare+.
