Of late I have been unable to get Wifi Hotspot to work as well. All the devices seem to recognize that the "hotspot signal" is present, but won't connect (over Wifi).
Fortunately for me, I mostly want to use the hotspot function to provide faster connectivity for my laptop, and USB Hotspot always works for me (I go into Network Preferences, turn wifi off on the laptop, and select USB networking).
