Ah, now I understand what you are saying. The emails are being spoofed, but the hackers may have already copied the contacts of the hacked accounts. In the OP's case it appears the contacts were copied.
So the horse is out of the barn, and changing the password now, can not change what happened in the past.
Thanks for the expanded explanation.

When Yahoo was hacked a year or so ago, a number of email addresses and passwords were taken. Affected users were told to change the PW so that access cannot happen from then on. But, details such as contacts had already been accessed. So, yes, the emails are spoofed, but as the spoofed emails contain genuine people and genuine email addresses there is more chance that recipients may take the email as genuine. As long as the password was changed when this issue was found, the hackers cannot access the account, so now, changing the password wont help. Yahoo cannot help either as the spoofed emails are not transiting Yahoo's servers

My emphasis below. Please educate me.Are you staying that they are spoofing his account? Is this why you say changing his password won't help.BrentOn Jan 22, 2015, at 2:29 PM, Tony tdale@xtra.co.nz [apple-iphone] wrote:This may be a wave of previously hacked email addresses. About a year ago or so. If the others are in his Yahoo contacts this will prove it.Nothing can be done, but the emails are spam sent to known email addresses of known contacts. Even if he cancelled his email address, these will occur from time to time. Just delete, there is no harm apart from annoyance.I work for a telco, and our mail system was moved to Yahoo some years ago, we are well aware of this issue. The reason nothing can be done is that the emails are not being sent from him, or Yahoo. Changing the PW won't help, but he should have changed it when this issue was found, so his email cannot be accessed by the hackers. No harm in changing now though for peace of mind.

Subject: [apple-iphone] Hacked email
My son's Yahoo email has been hacked, sending email to me and others containing an attachment which I haven't opened. Who should he contact on Yahoo to clear up this matter? I've advised him to change his Yahoo password? The hacked email was sent from an iPhone, whether his or not I don't know. Is there a way to contact Yahoo directly instead of going thru the "contact Yahoo" email? I don't know the procedures for fixing this..Jesse
