He says some apps do give him the "need 8.x" warning, but others don't and only open the App being updated without updating. I looked around for sources for 7.1.2 yesterday and today and saw a lot of sources on a Google search, but none at Apple. Going to a few of them gave me multiple redirects and pages that wouldn't open, so I'm sort of left with the impression that we're not really going to find a reliable download source. He's mostly concerned about having to delete space on his 4S to get 7.1.2 wirelessly, but I made sure he knew he can do it via iTunes without deleting things first. I'm encouraging him to move to 8.x - I'm about to go from 7.1.1 on my iPad 4 to 8.1.3 via iTunes, as I had held off upgrading for the same space-oriented reason. Thanks to everyone who responded - we appreciate it.

Perhaps the updates in question are designed to only operate on the current operating system (8.1.2) thus stopping them from being applied to his older system. Reviewing the developer's site might offer some guidance.
