Hmmm.

I just tried something different.
I *had* previously connected my laptop to my iPhone (and my iPad) hotspot(s) over Wifi, but couldn't do so recently.

I just tried a different approach, which worked.

Instead of clicking on "iPhone" under "Personal Hotspots" in the Wifi menu, I clicked on "Join Other Network", and entered (on the laptop) "iPhone" and the password the iPhone provided when I physically turned Hotspot on in Settings.

And it connected right away.

As though it had lost or forgotten the hotspot password, or that password had changed.

Of late I have been unable to get Wifi Hotspot to work as well. All the devices seem to recognize that the "hotspot signal" is present, but won't connect (over Wifi).

Fortunately for me, I mostly want to use the hotspot function to provide faster connectivity for my laptop, and USB Hotspot always works for me (I go into Network Preferences, turn wifi off on the laptop, and select USB networking).

Good thought, but no joy.

I was too focused on using the WiFi to consider using either USB or BlueTooth. Sadly, I have never been able to get USB to work for this, and for some reason the iPhone does not see the MBP on BT, even though both are set as Discoverable.

I did give it another try though, and as a bad workaround, I did not set the MBP to act as a WiFi network, as it would conflict with the Airport Extreme Base Station that I use a Ethernet & WiFi router, even though I don't have it connected to the internet.

So I unplugged the AEBS and the Personal Hotspot was able to connect to my MBP. I guess I might be able to plug in the AEBS as a Ethernet router again, if I have the MBP forget the AEBS WiFi.

Does it work by either of the *other* 2 standard methods of connection (USB and Bluetooth)? Does anything here help: <http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT4517>

[apple-iphone] Re: iOS update

I don't normally download within the first 24 hours, nor did I this time. I waited two days, which is usually plenty, given that I normally do a download and then install as a separate action. This is the first time I've ever seen time estimates this long or fluctuations in the estimates that varied this wildly. BTW, I updated my husband's iPhone 5c yesterday, and ran into the same thing. I'm guessing that more people are jumping right into updating than usually have in the past. All of the updates were successful, so that's not the problem. I was just commenting on how different the experience was this time. Sandy> > This is the most trouble I've ever had with updating an iOS! My usual procedure is to download the update in iTunes, just in case there's a glitch in the download process. Then I do the update. No problem at all either on my iPhone 5s or my iPad Air. This time, however, I kept getting told that the download would take 12-14 hours, so I decided to bite the bullet and do an over-the-air update this time. Big mistake. I've been getting messages to say that it would take 10 minutes, then 15, then 6, then 60, etc. > > Do you normally download the upgrade in the first 24 hours after it is released? > Or wait a day or three? Probably the servers are slow because of everybody updating at once. If you wait a week or two it should go much faster. Personally I never update in the first month of an update. Let somebody else discover the bugs first.

[apple-iphone] Re: iOS update

When I finally decided to upgrade, it failed the first time. So I tried it over night and I think it finished . That was on my iphone 5.
I had not problems with me iphone 6+.

I may be mistaken but I think sometimes it is the internet that is at fault or it is that Apple is very busy or maybe it depends
on which phone you have and how much room it as on it.

[apple-iphone] Personal Hotspot issues since iOS 8.1.2

Since updating my iPhone 4S to OS 8.1.2, I have not been able to use AT&T Personal Hotspot to connect my MacBook Pro to the internet.

I have reset the Network Settings and re-established the connections between the iPhone, MBP and my Airport Extreme Base Station. I then re-started the iPhone.

Any one else having this problem? Any suggestions?

I am hesitant to upgrade to 8.1.3 OTA since I am having data issues on the iPhone.

[apple-iphone] Re: Apple Releases iOS 8.1.3 With Bug Fixes, Storage Size Reduction - Mac Rumors

Actually I didn't insist on anything. I was simply asking for information about the consequences of upgrading 7.x to 8.x in one way or the other, to which I never received a reply. It's pretty much been rendered moot now, as I was able to upgrade my iPad to 8.1.3 from 7.x after learning a good bit about iTunes during my attempt to use it for the upgrade. The OTA upgrade required about 1 GB more iPad space to be freed before use. Examining Usage, I couldn't find an easy way to delete that much space so I went to iTunes. Unlike what I had read about it, iTunes also asked for >700 MB to be removed before use. Since both now required significant deletions, I went back and discovered an app with 3 GB of data I could delete without a problem. My ISP was having a terrible night for no apparent reason, and both OTA and iTunes upgrades were predicting 6-8 hour download/install times, so for convenience I did it OTA. It wound up taking only about 4-5 hours and fortunately succeeded in one attempt with no interruptions. After that I updated my 5s from 8.1.1-->8.1.3 OTA which only took about 30 minutes.

In the big scheme of things, I think this is probably a minor annoyance, but it is definitely an annoyance. I still have my husband's iPhone to update, too, so I'm not looking forward to that. <sigh> Just venting a bit here. ;) Sandy

I've had that problem so freed up some space. No biggie.

There is nothing wrong with either, just some people have had problems with OTA with iOS 8 because of not having enough room on their device to download the installer and do the install. Mostly those will smaller capacity devices or too much stuff on their device.

[apple-iphone] minimum available space on a iOS device?

On Macs we have a recommended minimum available storage, but has any one seen a suggestion of the same for iOS devices?

Since there are still a lot of 32MB devices still out there, and especially since iOS 8 upgrades seem to be so much larger than prior upgrades.

I am also asking just for good practices for a healthy iDevice.
