The reason I mentioned it is that I and others don't keep folders on the server, do it would not work for us. Then i realized you meant folders on the server.

You're correct, of course, Brent. I wasn't clear, in that I meant that folders could be set up on the server (in most cases, such as in iCloud) so that the messages wouldn't disappear.

If you don't want the message to disappear from the server when using IMAP, simply don't put it into the trash. Very easy solution and one I use all the time. If you don't want saved messages clogging up your inbox, make other folders and refile the messages into them.
