Then don't turn off iMessage, but turn on "Send as SMS", which it will only do when needed, and work in iMessage the rest of the time.

You don't want to risk losing contact with the kids by forgetting to turn iMessage back on. Looks like a app for the girls to chat on would be best resolution. Mike R
