Only 2 of the phones have iMessage the other is an Android phone.
The problem is that the conversations start as SMS but eventually one of the iPhones converts the chat into iMessage and then the Android person no longer receives the messages.
Settings — Messages
"Send as SMS" should be set to ON.
(The explanatory line in Settings says, "Send as SMS when iMessage is unavailable." And when you are attempting to sent to an Android phooe, iMessage is unavailable.)
