IMAP is not a workaround. It is significantly more powerful than POP3. Configured correctly the e-mail server has the "master" copy of your e-mail which synchronizes to all your client devices. Delete an e-mail in one place and synchronization deletes it everywhere. Read it on one device and it gets marked as read everywhere. Mark it as unread and synchronization takes care of that. It works offline (like airplanes) and catches up when you connect again.
Sharing an e-mail address, as Cathy does, is at best ... unusual. For any conventional e-mail scenario IMAP is generally going to provide a better overall experience than POP3.
There may be some oddities but those are generally client shortfalls. For example Microsoft Outlook insists on setting up individual inboxes for each IMAP account which is sometimes not what the user wants. Other clients perform more thoughtfully.
