Could it be that the 3rd sister occasionally uses the iPad in the conversation & that us what switches the exchange over to iMessage?

I'll bet either sis 1 or sis 2, or both, has sis 3 in their contacts with both phone # & aol.com. At that point iMessage would go, "Ah, I can switch back to iMessage from SMS." At that point it feels it no longer has to send SMS to a non-Apple device.

The conversations initially start as SMS with the messages addresses in green connotating an SMS group chat. Eventually a message appears in each of the iPhone users text inbox within the conversation saying the other iPhone user added the Android sister to the conversation using iMessage. Neither sister has done anything and the Android sister obviously can't be communicated with over iMessage.

If they delete the conversations and start a new text group, it will work for a few more texts. The 3rd sister has never had an iPhone so it isn't the issue of iMessage servers mistakenly identifying her as still on iMessage. She does have an iPad but that only has her set up as receiving iMessages at her e-mail address (@aol).

Somehow the conversation corrupts from an SMS text to iMessage with no known user intervention.

Settings — Messages

"Send as SMS" should be set to ON.

(The explanatory line in Settings says, "Send as SMS when iMessage is unavailable." And when you are attempting to sent to an Android phooe, iMessage is unavailable.)

Has that changed? It used to be iMessage > off/on, rather than SMS > off/on.
