Most domestic flights are under 3 hours, so probably no need for extra battery power there. West Coast to Japan is about 17 hours flying time, so one extra battery might just make it.

I would assume that using your own back up music would not use data and so a long term battery case would certainly be well worth it especially on a long airplane flight.
