Yes - I have concluded they are different issues. The freezing seems to have stopped the minute I posted, after two or three days of annoyance

I'm having same apps update problem but have read that it's due to servers being down. As far as your phone shutting down, I'm no help there.

It also will not update apps - the UPDATE button reacts for a second or two as usual, then reverts to UPDATE, and pressing UPDATE ALL produces the same effect.
