I would guess for those using a lot of battery power because they're listening to streaming music rather than their own music perhaps it could be more costly because of the data situation.I would assume that using your own back up music would not use data and so a long term battery case would certainly be well worth it especially on a long airplane flight.

If you have a 5S, and no accessory battery, and you have a flight that is longer than 36 HOURS, then yes; otherwise, the battery should last more than the entire flight listening to on-device audio.
On your 6+, even longer.
Obviously, on a long flight on an Airplane, you might as well put the phone in Airplane Mode, which saves battery.
