I think you answered your question yourself.

The messages which you missed when you had switched off the cellular, are the ones which are making your phone use data.

Perhaps, they are reachable only via the telephone number and not via wifi.

You must be on GSM network since I believe CDMA network does not give rise to this anomaly.

I got my iPhone 6 and activated it on Sunday. Since then it has used almost 500 kb of cellular data. I do not understand why and am concerned about this because I am on a very limited data plan with Verizon.

The question is not what to shut off or not use to prevent data usage from climbing. The question is why it is using cellular when it is on wifi? It is almost like it is choosing cellular over the wifi.

Does anyone have an answer to that question or what I can do about it? I want to keep this phone because I love it but can't risk having charges added on each month due to going over my data usage. Thanks for any or all help!
