Also, there must be an app, Apple or 3rd party, that will tell me the MB/GB taken up by any given app I have on my iDevices - I just noticed my 32GB iPad is almost out of storage and I want to drop some things. Do you know such an app?

Settings — General — Usage — Manage Storage
If you tap on an app here, you can choose to delete it without having to go back to find it on your home screen.
I *think* that is the same on iOS 7 as on 8.
