You only hand in the phone if you upgrade at the 2/3 point. 12 months on the 18 month plan. If you go full term you keep the phone.

To me it sounds like an auto lease plan. At contract end, you turn in the phone, if you want another phone, you pay for the lease during the new contract term. And like a auto lease, you may have the option to buy the car at the end of the contract.Why does this not seem "financially workable for ATT"? It has worked well for the auto dealers for decades.
