Hi all,
So I have now been running iOS 8 on my iPhone 5S 64 GB since its non-beta introduction and I have a few observations. (I am updated to iOS 8.0.2).
1. There is a significant battery drain for me. My 5S was 11 months old when Apple replaced the phone for me in August (for free - thank you Apple Care). So my phone is only about two months old. The day after I loaded iOS 8, my battery started discharging much more quickly.
Some mornings I will read my email, read facebook, and check some other things and in the space of about 40 minutes my phone will go from 23 percent battery to almost zero. In fact the other day it went from 18 percent to 0 in about 25 minutes.
2. I was having WiFi connection problems such that Youtube and other videos did not run properly if at all. I read on a forum to try resetting your network settings. That seemed to have worked. The iOS 8.0.2 patch may have helped too.
3. I installed the swiftkey third party keyboard and have been using the predictive text option in the built in keyboard (I really like it). I have noticed that the predictive text option keeps disappearing. I then check the General > Keyboard settings and the toggle is still on. I turn it off and back on and that seems to help. Everyone once in a while I have to reboot.
4.I am having a terrible time with my messages app. I find sometimes that it only shows the messages from the same day and I have to exit out of the app and back in. Some messages that get sent don't appear when I relaunch the app. My friends tell me that they did not receive the messages.
As an aside, I had many GB of messages saved on my iPhone. There is in settings (not sure it is recent or not) an option to keep 30 days, 1 year or Forever. I changed the settings to 1 year and it did clear up a great deal of storage space. I read in one post that when you change from forever to a 1 year, you must leave your phone alone for some time. It actually takes many minutes for your phone to delete the messages. I am not sure if this is my problem or not.
5. Batter percentage - ok I am cheating - this problem relates to my iPad 3 but I toggle the battery percentage on on my iPad and it doesn't show up. The toggle is on but I just can't get that number next to the battery symbol. It worked before iOS8.
6. Wonky apps - I have had many apps just stop working and take me back to the home screen. The app updates seem to help.
7. Automatic payments - I had the starbucks app automatically reload on my phone. When iOS 8 came out it stopped doing that, perhaps due to the payment app.
8. Blue Screen of Death (sort of - on my iPad) - I had my iPad stop working a couple of times and reboot and reinstall the iOS. Now my storage was very full so that may have played a hand in it but the iOS seems much more unstable on my iPad...which is older and in need of replacing come this fall.
So those are my experiences that I thought I would share.
G.
