I was having the same problem with both my iPhone and my iPad Air on my desktop.

I never could get the problem solved; I ended up completely uninstalling iTunes, reinstalling (after rebooting) the newest iTunes, re-setting my I-Gadgets (wiping them to factory settings), and restoring them from back-ups. Since then, everything seems to work.

The USB cable seems good because I am using same cable for charging with electric adapter.
