Sounds like a bad battery. I would replace it. The iFixit route is not something I would recommend to everybody, but replacing a battery is very easy, less than 5 minutes, my replacement lasts all day with heavy app usage, and I usually still have 70 to 80% charge left at night. I have a Mophie case from before the problem - I never use it unless I am on a plane and want to watch 3 or 4 movies on the phone.
