You can also control the volume from the Control Center that can be activated by swiping up from the bottom of the screen in iOS7.
You shouldn't need to remove the cover to access the volume up/down buttons, Susan. As you're looking at the screen, with the home button at the bottom, the volume up/down buttons will be on the left side, upper half, just below the mute switch (covered by a flap if you have a Defender case). There should be raised "buttons" visible in the cover.

I am trying to listen to music from the phone. No ear pieces or bluetooth involved. I don't remember where the volume control is. I have an Otter on, protecting the phone. Do I need to remove it?
