Hi Barry,
There is an option in iTunes to replace information on the iPhone with information from the computer, This is in Advanced at the bottom of the Info window. Is it possible that this was selected?
BTW wouldn't it be easier to type your calendar info into the computer's calendar app (iCal/Calendar on a Mac, Outlook on a PC)?
