You can have either just the iTunes Media folder, or the entire iTunes folder, on an external or NAS. Is that what you mean? I do the latter, the advantages of which are that iTunes can be updated from more than one computer (although not at the same time), and you get prompted if the external or NAS are not available. Or you can have most of the iTunes-related files on one machine, and just put the movie collection out on an external. (This is not an uncommon choice.)
