I love having all the birthdays show up on my calendar, but I go about it differently.
I add each person to my contact list, and enter their birthday there.
Then, each birthday not only shows up on my calendar, but it actually tells me how old the person is.
I've never had a problem doing this - in fact I even added my pets to contacts so I know when their birthdays are.

All seemed OK, until the next day when I noticed all my info had disappeared!
All I had done was sync to iTunes.
