That was it - I guess it wasn't showing "All" my contacts.  I never have used groups, just one big list so I don't know how this happened.  But I now have some new contacts, Test1, Test2, and so on! :)

What contacts are you using under groups? I use my Google contacts list so I have the option for "All on My iPhone" unchecked.
