Yes, I've done everything suggested by all the helpful members. I didn't like the darkened photos, but can live with it or change contrast when looking at pix. The increased contrast in Accessability doesn't change the mail/message keyboard. I'm hoping Apple will address this issue, I surely can't be the only senior user with this complaint.

Have you also turned on Increased Contrast in Accessability? It does turn the background near black and darken the "key tops".
That is as good as it gets, with built-in settings, that I have found so far. But it also seems to darken your photos.
