When I bought my iPhone 8 Plus, I had Apple put a tempered glass screen protector on it.

I read somewhere it was fragile. I put a glass screen protector on it immediately after I took the factory film off. Not taking any chances.
I don't usually put one on my iPads but I did manage to put a hairline 3/4" scratch on my iPad Pro. Not sure how although I suspect it was my ring. Never happened with my earlier iPads.
