Same problem here. I located the folder with all my ringtones in it. Opened iTunes and dragged them on the Ringtones folder. I was surprised that they attached themselves back to the correct contacts.

Work as a ringtone. Just get the Apple default. No, this wasn't a purchase from the Apple store, I created it myself. Am really frustrated!!!
Anybody else having the problem, seems there are quite a few on the Apple Support communities.
