Hi Ashi - I can't speak to the X because I always use a case and screen protector. But like you I have had iPads for years (one for 4 years) without a scratch. I have a flip case for it and only use It in one spot - from chair to a table. No screen protectors on any of the iPads. However I did get a hairline scratch near one side on my new iPad Pro 10.5"
I chalked it up to a careless moment or just an accident. These do happen. So especially for a device that goes all over the place a little more protection with a screen protector may e wise.
I certainly will consider a screen protector on another iPad when I get one.

I have had almost every version of the iPhone since the 2g. I am very careful with my iPhones but do not like screen protectors or even cases. I do however always use a flip case ( completely protects the screen) when I put it in my purse and always dedicate a special compartment in the purse exclusively for the iPhone. The iPhone X is by far, in my experience, the most easily scratched iPhone ever! I was just wondering if any of you felt the same way...
I've had the iPad Pro 12.7 inch since it first came out. I use it every day and carry it with me every where with the same precautions as mentioned above and not a scratch in 2 full years of heavy use. That's why I was shocked by how quickly the iPhone X scratched... I know I can't be the only person with this experience. You would think if you pay $1300 for a phone it would be more durable; not considerably less scratch resistant and if this is a known issue then Apple should have warned us all...
Ashi——————I read somewhere it was fragile. I put a glass screen protector on it immediately after I took the factory film off. Not taking any chances.
I don't usually put one on my iPads but I did manage to put a hairline 3/4" scratch on my iPad Pro. Not sure how although I suspect it was my ring. Never happened with my earlier iPads.
