I have read that the Apple lightning-to-earphone adaptor includes a DAC (and therefore also a stereo amplifier), but it looks too small for that!
"This tiny adapter houses a microscopic stereo digital-to-analog converter (DAC), a stereo headphone amplifier, a microphone preamplifier and monophonic analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and power converters to run this all."

A DAC is a digital to analog converter. Speakers/earphones need an analog output to produce sound.
