A DAC is a digital to analog converter. Speakers/earphones need an analog output to produce sound.

My 8 came with earbuds that terminate in a lightning connector.  There is also a lightning connector to 1/8" adapter pigtail included with the phone.  Of course, bluetooth phones are a non-issue.
