How can you tell that the SIM was unlocked?

This was bizarre. Several minutes after using my iphone, I went to it again. It had turned itself off. I cannot imagine that I had accidentally gone through the complex actions needed to turn it off, but there it was - off. It took me half a minute to work out what was wrong. I really didn't believe it. More - when the iphone 6 plus was rebooted, the SIMM was not locked! How can this happen?

This was just an hour or two before the upgrade to iOS 11.
