Oh Pete - I know exactly what you will be going through. I had that happen to my 5s while I was on a trip. Thank goodness for an external battery pack.
So far my 6S plus, iPad mini and 10.5 inch iPad pro haven't been running hot or draining fast. Lucky.
Have you hard rebooted? Someone recommended that to me. I now always reboot after an update no matter how small.
