I have many apps that won't run on iOS 11.Would it be ok to do an OTA update without removing beforehand? That works fine. The old apps don't vanish automatically; they will still be on the device. In fact, some of them may well get iOS 11 updates in the upcoming weeks. And you can always delete them later.Would they not be loaded if I did it through iTunes and a restore from backup.Anything in the backup on your computer would be restored to the device.A questionable way to go. Answering my own question it probably is better to get rid of excess non functioning files before updatingI disagree, if you just mean not-ready-for-iOS 11.But if you mean you want to take this opportunity to dump residual apps you don't really need any more anyway, then go ahead. But there will be nothing to stop you from deleting them later, after you upgrade.
