I use it often and the only problem I have had is trying to send as an audio message from time to time. When that happens I just send as text. Have you tried using other apps that utilize the microphone such as Google Search?

It seems like mine is hit or miss. One time it will work fine and another it goes to the speaking screen and does nothing.
I am always in a good coverage area or on wifi.
